The 24km Penang Second Bridge was built to overcome traffic congestion on the old Penang Bridge built in 1986. In 2006, it was unveiled as a project under the Ninth Malaysia Plan. Construction started in 2008. The Bank part-financed the construction via a RM500 million bridging facility to facilitate the funding needs of the project. The bridge was opened to traffic in 2014 and is currently the second longest bridge in Southeast Asia.
