Milestones

Over 50 years of strategic funding and nation building means we’ve played our part in transforming Malaysia into the progressive nation we see today. Yet, our achievements were only possible thanks to your support and trust in us. Our milestones below capture key achievements we’re proud of over the years.

Bank Pembangunan’s strategic roadmap is launched. Agenda 2025 outlines our aim to become a trusted partner, a catalyst of social and economic progress and a talent hub for nation builders.

2022

We merged with Danajamin to bolster Malaysia’s development finance ecosystem.

MIND was launched as a step towards impact-driven finance.

2021

We launched the Industry Digitalisation Transformation Fund, Sustainable Development Financing Fund and the Public Transport Fund. We revamped and launched the Tourism Infrastructure Fund 2.0 and the Maritime Fund 2.0.

Inception of Amanah Lestari Alam to create awareness about environmental sustainability.

2019

Expanded into the Oil & Gas sector.

2011

Demerger of Bank Pembangunan and SME Bank.

2008

Received the Capital Markets and Services Act 2007 certification by the Securities Commission to perform corporate financing services in the infrastructure sector.

2007

Bank Pembangunan & Bank Industri merged to realign DFI activities in Malaysia. Our mandate was revised to include infrastructure, maritime and technology.

Our name reverted to Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Berhad, with the introduction of a new logo. Bank Industri, a subsidiary of Bank Pembangunan, was renamed SME Bank.

2005

We funded the development of the 9.7km SMART Tunnel – the longest stormwater drainage tunnel in Southeast Asia and second longest in Asia.

Sharing hydration with seven million consumers (Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn. Bhd.).

2004

We were listed as one of the six prescribed DFIs under the DFIA 2002, and we were also granted “Exempt Dealer Status” from MOF, allowing us to provide corporate advisory, corporate financing & underwriting services.

We launched the RM600 million Tourism Fund.

2002

We launched our RM5 billion 25-year Infrastructure Notes Programme.

2000

Our paid-up capital was increased to RM1 billion, and we changed our name to Bank Pembangunan dan Infrastruktur Malaysia Berhad.

1999

Received a new mandate to finance infrastructure projects.

1998

EXIM Bank was under Bank Industri.

1995

BPMB-NIF Modal Teroka Sdn Bhd was incorporated as a venture capital company with external investors.

1994

Seed Capital Scheme established to assist Bumiputera entrepreneurs.

1993

We were the largest DFI in Malaysia with total assets of RM1.2 billion.

1989

Our cumulative loan approval surpassed RM1 billion and we grew into our new HQ in Jalan Sultan Ismail.

1988

Bank Pembangunan started to welcome non-Bumiputera companies.

1986

Small Scale Enterprises Programme launched with a special fund allocation from the World Bank.

Bank Pembangunan’s Islamic Development Unit was formed. We were one of the two banks to offer Islamic financing.

1984

Entrepreneur Development & Special Leasing Programmes launched to strengthen and expand assistance to Bumiputera entrepreneurs.

1981

Bank Pembangunan’s loan approvals exceeded RM100 million for the first time.

1980

Bank Kemajuan Perusahaan Malaysia Berhad was incorporated on 7 August 1979. It later changed its name to Bank Industri & Teknologi Malaysia Berhad in 2000 before assuming its present name, SME Bank.

1979

Pembangunan Leasing Corporation (PLC) Sdn. Bhd was incorporated to provide leasing facilities.

1977

Bank Pembangunan received its first government loan, RM15 million cheque presented by Prime Minister, Tun Abdul Razak.

1974

Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Berhad was established to develop Bumiputera enterpreneurs.
