Dato’ Sulaiman Mohd Tahir is a highly accomplished and respected figure in Malaysia’s banking fraternity, having served the industry with distinction for over 35 years of distinguished leadership in Malaysia’s financial sector. He started his banking career in 1987 at Bank of Commerce Berhad. There he took on several front line roles, including in branch banking, corporate banking and as an area business manager covering SMEs and Corporates.
From 2000 to 2005, he made substantial contributions to Bank Bumiputra Commerce Berhad, overseeing the bank’s retail sales and distribution channels. In 2006, Dato’ Sulaiman began a new chapter in his career when Bank Bumiputra Commerce Group merged with CIMB creating CIMB Group, one of the largest universal banking Group in ASEAN. With a proven track record, Dato’ Sulaiman advanced through the ranks at the Group, holding a series of senior roles, including Regional Head of Consumer Sales and Distribution responsible for the Group’s retail and business clients in the region. His journey with CIMB Group concluded with his appointment as the Chief Executive Officer (“CEO”)/Executive Director of CIMB Bank. His strong business acumen and ability to drive organisational change have been pivotal to his success.
In 2015, Dato’ Sulaiman joined Ambank Group as the Group CEO until his retirement in November 2023. During his tenure, he has been instrumental in driving growth and innovation at AmBank, leveraging a professional journey in the Malaysian banking industry. Under Dato’ Sulaiman’s strategic leadership, he has implemented strategic realignment initiatives that earned notable accolades. His contributions to the banking industry demonstrate excellence and are highly respected. Previously, Dato’ Sulaiman sat on the boards of several other companies under AmBank Group. He is also a Board Member of Payments Network Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. (PayNet).
