50 SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED TO COMMEMORATE BANK PEMBANGUNAN MALAYSIA BERHAD’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY

Wednesday, 30 August 2023, Kuala Lumpur – In commemoration of its 50th anniversary, Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Berhad (BPMB) today awarded 50 Malaysian students with scholarships to pursue their undergraduate studies at selected universities locally, and abroad.

Out of 50 students, 9 students will be awarded scholarships through the Bank’s Undergraduate Scholarship (BAGUS) programme, while the remaining 41 recipients will be awarded scholarships from the Bank’s Zakat Education allocation. Of these, 6 scholars will continue their studies abroad, while 44 scholars will be pursuing their education locally.

Group Chief Executive Officer, Roni Abdulwahab said, “BPMB’s mandate is to support Malaysia's development needs. We aspire to be a hub where we nurture talent for our bank, our industry, and the nation. With these bright minds, we will create socio-economic impact as they contribute to the sustainable growth of our economy. On behalf of the Bank, I welcome our new scholars who are about to begin their exciting journey and may they all return equipped to help deliver impact capital for national development”.

BPMB’s Shariah Committee Chairman, Professor Dr. Aznan Hassan also added “It is with immense honour that we extend the opportunity of quality education to the 41 deserving students, who will be beneficiaries of BPMB’s Zakat Education allocation. When this initiative was launched in 2019, only 15 students from asnaf backgrounds were fortunate recipients of these scholarships. I take immense pride in witnessing the transformation of the Bank’s Zakat Education program from merely providing living allowances to students, to now establishing a comprehensive learning support system for them. We are truly delighted to contribute to the realization of their educational aspirations at their chosen universities. I would also like to congratulate the recipients of the BAGUS scholarship and wish them all the very best”.

The BAGUS Scholarship is part of BPMB’s Corporate Social Responsibility (“CSR”) initiatives to fulfil its aspiration to be a talent hub. The primary objective of this programme is to provide access to quality education for the deserving outstanding Malaysian students to pursue their studies at leading universities in Malaysia, and abroad.

Also present at the ceremony today were BPMB’s Board of Directors, Shariah Committee, Senior Leadership Team, and the parents of the scholars.

This year’s scholarship award is one of many activities organised in conjunction with the Bank’s 50th anniversary celebration.
